PDN – In October 1971 the Shah of Persia [Iran] organized a big event to celebrate the 2500th anniversary of the Persian Empire.
The expenses of the celebration were highly criticized by the Western media; thus, many leaders in the West refused to accept the Shah's invitation to attend the event. The US President Richard Nixon, The Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and The Netherlands' Queen Juliana were among them.
This short piece which has been published in the Dutch daily “Limburgsch Dagblad” writes that it seems the only member of Royal family of the Netherlands who will attend the celebration in Persepolis will be Prince Bernhard, the husband of the queen and father of Princess Beatrix (current queen of the Netherlands).

Prins alleen naar Perzië ?

HILVERSUM – Het is mogelijk dat prinses Beatrix en prins Claus op 15 oktober niet aanwezig zullen zijn bij de grootse viering van het 2500-jarig bestaan van het Perzische rijk in Persepolis (Iran).

Prins Bernhard gaat in ieder geval en zal dan tevens de koningin vertegenwoordigen. Van de zijde van het secretariaat van prins Bernhard werd ons gisteren meegedeeld dat de Sjah prins Bernhard, prinses Beatrix en prins Claus heeft uitgenodigd en dat alle drie oorspronkelijk de uitnodiging hebben aanvaard.

De Regeringsvoorlichtingsdienst voegde hieraan toe dat thans wordt overwogen de prins alleen te laten gaan. In deze zaak staat de regering voor een dilemma: aan de ene kant is er gevoel voor de kritiek op de dure viering van het feest in het arme Iran en aan de andere kant wil zij aan de goede relaties met de Sjah geen afbreuk doen.
