Rumi Concert in Amsterdam: THE ORIGIN OF LIGHT | 22 & 23 November 2024

Experience a hushed cappella concert by Orchestre Partout & Wereldkoor Haarlem, inspired by the mystical poetry of the Persian poet Rumi.

Unlike the energetic, danceable music that Orchestre Partout often performs, this concert invites us to turn inward and embrace the timelessness of silence. Together with the Wereldkoor Haarlem, Orchestre Partout brings a unique cappella experience in which singing connects us both to ourselves and to each other.

With new compositions based on Rumi’s poetry, thirty singers create an imaginary world centered on inspiration and connection. All music is performed exclusively with the voice, without instruments. After all, singing is the purest, most direct form of music, touching our souls and reflecting our deepest longing for connection.

Soloists Behrang Alibabaei and Abeer Al Batal give their own free interpretation of the ancient texts, with the choir and sometimes the audience singing along in meditative, repetitive patterns. The fusion of different voices creates a new musical landscape, where traditions and cultures come together intuitively through improvisation.

PROGRAM
Behrang Alibabaei is a highly gifted ‘tahrir’ singer. This Persian song form (very recognizable by its ‘yodel’-like phrases) has deep roots in Persian culture. Behrang is a master of free improvisation.
Abeer Al Batal is a Syrian singer. She has an improbably lithe voice with a warm timbre. She sings not only in (classical) Arabic, but just as easily in other Middle Eastern languages.
Both soloists have an intrinsic motivation to keep their musical heritage alive. Not just because it is under pressure or in danger of disappearing but precisely because the music is part of their identity.

Orchestre Partout: Based on the belief that music is a universal language that connects people and cultures, Orchestre Partout makes music with newcomers and Dutch musicians. Orchestre Partout is a unique music house based in Amsterdam. Since 2010, it has been organizing weekly music activities in asylum seekers’ centers across the country. It also offers a program for talents and professionals in cooperation with the Bimhuis, Mezrab and the Conservatory of Amsterdam, among others. In this way they contribute to a colorful society in which everyone can develop their musical talent and every voice counts and sounds.

Wereldkoor Haarlem: sings authentic world repertoire: from a three-part Sephardic lullaby to a five-part Polynesian dance song. The original repertoire is performed in a quirky and open manner. The choir consists of advanced amateurs and is directed by Tatiana Lina.
