The European Conference of Iranian Studies (ECIS) is one of Europe’s largest conferences in Iranian Studies. It is held every four years and organized by the Societas Iranologica Europaea (SIE).
The tenth edition of the conference ECIS 10 will be hosted by Leiden University in the Netherlands and will take place from 21 to 25 August 2023. (More info.)
The conference also includes the Dutch premiere of two documentaries directed by Pejman Akbarzadeh: “Derbent: What Persia Left Behind” (Tuesday, 22 Aug., Venue: Lipsius Building, Room 019, 18:00-19:00 hrs + Q&A). The film is a comprehensive documentary on the largest defensive complex of the Sasanian Empire in the Caucasus and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
“Taq Kasra: Wonder of Architecture” (Thursday, 24 Aug., Venue: Lipsius Building, Room 019, 18:00-19:00 hrs + Q&A), the first-ever documentary film about the world’s largest brick vault and the symbol of the Persian Empire in the Sassanian era (221–654 AD). The Persian Dutch Network has produced both films.

ECIS 10 is hosted by the Leiden University’s Institute for Area Studies (LIAS):
Gabrielle van den Berg, Ab de Jong and Elena Paskaleva. The keynote speakers include Rudi Matthee (University of Delaware), Julia Rubanovich (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Touraj Atabaki (Leiden University), Saloumeh Gholami (Goethe University Frankfurt) and Pierfrancesco Callieri (University of Bologna).
