“Return to the Origins: Techniques of a Musical Language” (Conversations with Reza Vali) – Book

“Return to the Origins” is about Reza Vali’s experience of returning to the music of his own culture, after studying and teaching European/Western music for nearly fifty years.
Starting with a criticism of Eurocentrism in music, especially in music education, Vali proceeds with a comprehensive analysis of the Persian music system, the Dastgâh-Maghâm. All aspects of the system, interval, mode, rhythm, form, etc., are analyzed and discussed, observed from the view point of a contemporary Iranian composer.

The book is published by the Shermin and Bijan Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Iran and Persian Gulf Studies (affiliated to Princeton University) and distributed by the Persian Dutch Network in Amsterdam. For more information please contact
